He made ten bases of bronze...One base had four bronze wheels clad in bronze, four times... The handiwork of the wheels was as the work of a chariot wheel: Their hands poured all their rims, their hubs, and their spokes. (1 Kings 7:27-33, ARTB)
A note from A. Frances Werner:
This condensation of 7 verses describes the base of the 10 LAVERS that Hiram poured for Solomon's temple. The priests used these lavers to clean the sacrifices. The lavers of 40 baths of water sat on the base.
This information really had meant very little to me. However, the limited use of the word WHEEL (OPAN, Strong's 212), only 36 times in the Old Testament, led to an interesting insight.
The word WHEEL is used to describe the chariot WHEELS in the deliverance from Egypt; it is used in this set of verses, and it is used in Ezekiel's vision of the heavenly temple. (There are 3 minor verses about jewelry, and cart WHEELS used for threshing.) The design for the LAVER bases is not ascribed to anyone--Yahweh, Solomon nor Hiram. But the design captures one of the connections to BAPTISM that I've always known, but never visualized: The waters of the Reed Sea were OVER the chariot WHEELS stuck in the mud. The connection between the deliverance from Egypt and the activity in the temple could be seen everyday.
This observation is merely my own (and a little late in coming!) It is also based upon the fact that the verses in 1 Kings goes out of its way to tell us that these were designed to look like CHARIOT WHEELS. Selah.
There is an ERROR in the ARTB bible search. The Strong's number for WHEEL is 212, but was entered incorrectly as 36. Here is the full listing:
