The word OBEY does not appear in ARTB. What's the real meaning?
The word obey isn’t in the Ancient Roots Translinear Bible (ARTB) Old Testament. What’s going on?
Here's a surprising example of where other translations have inserted an extra English word throughout the text, even when it doesn't match the Hebrew. And this insertion has a profound impact on our perception of God.
The word obey has harsh connotations. The American Dictionary says "to fulfill the command, order or instruction". So obeying God implies that he's giving us commands, orders and instructions, rather than having a conversation. And it implies that we are only there to fulfill his commands.
Here are some quotes that we've all grown up with, memorized, and generally are ingrained in all of us:
Exodus 19:5 NIV: If you obey me fully and keep my covenant, than out of all nations you will be my treasured possession.
KJV: Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people.
All the versions I've examined except ARTB used the word obey. How about Deuteronomy 27:10?
NIV: Obey the Lord you God and follow his commands and decrees that I give you today.
KJV: Thou shalt therefore obey the voice of the Lord thy God, and do his commandments and his statutes.
The list goes on and on. But the interesting news for all of us is that the orginal Hebrew word isn't obey at all. The word is hear. The original Hebrew word shama (Strong's number 8085) occurs over 1000 times in the Old Testament. In all other versions, it is translated hear or listen the majority of the time with about 6% of the cases translated as obey.
But ARTB uses the word hear 100% of the time. Now just take a moment and reflect about what these same verses mean to all of us when the words are all consistent:
Exodus 19:5 ARTB: Now if you ||hear|| my voice and keep my covenant, you will be a prize to me from all people.
What are the double lines around the word hear? ARTB uses the double lines (||hear||) whenever the word is repeated in the ancient language. Wow. Now we see that God is BEGGING us to hear him.
Deuteronomy 27:10ARTB: Hear the voice of Yahweh your God, and do his commandments and his decrees.
Take some time to reflect. My thoughts are that we have a God who is begging us to hear him, to really hear him. My personal reflection is that I believe if we really hear God, that doing what he said is easy. It doesn’t take a command, it doesn’t take an order, and it doesn’t take blind obedience. It has made me examine when I’m doing things out of “obedience” whether I’ve really asked to hear God’s voice. It made me think that kids who “don’t obey” their parents probably never really “heard” them. What does it take to “hear” someone or God?
